
Sholay, made under the direction of Ramesh Sippy, is one of the films that remains etched in the minds of people across the generations.

Released in 1975, this film offered a larger-than-life cinematic experience and featured Bollywood giants like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini and Amjad Khan, among others.

Among the many stars was Asrani. He wasn’t the lead, but he carved his own space with his comic brilliance.

His portrayal of the eccentric jailer from the British era in Sholay remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic comedic roles.

With just a few scenes and superb lines, Asrani had the audience in splits. His peculiar act and unique speech became so immortal that people still smile upon hearing his dialogues today.

Wondering how much he earned for this legendary role? According to reports, Asrani was paid approximately Rs 15,000 for his brilliant role as the jailer in Sholay. This fee was normal for a supporting actor at the time.

Dharmendra was paid Rs 1.5 lakh, while Sanjeev Kumar got Rs 1.25 lakh. Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini were paid Rs 1 lakh and Rs 75,000 respectively. ‘Gabbar Singh’ Amjad Khan reportedly got Rs 50,000 for his role.

Besides Sholay, Asrani has appeared in over 350 films. He was loved for his perfect comic timing and expressive face in films like Chupke Chupke, Khatta Meetha, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Namak Haraam and Taqdeerwala.

Asrani passed away on October 20 at the age of 84. The veteran actor breathed his last around 3.30 pm at Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Mumbai’s Juhu after battling age-related complications.

Asrani may be gone, but his contribution to Indian cinema will always bring a smile to movie lovers faces.
