Amar Kaushik reveals new details on Mahavatar, his upcoming mythological film starring Vicky Kaushal. The director calls it his most personal and divine project yet.

Stree director Amar Kaushik has shared new details about his much-anticipated mythological drama Mahavatar, starring Vicky Kaushal.
Filmmaker Amar Kaushik, best known for directing Stree, has opened up about his upcoming mythological epic Mahavatar, starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead. The director described the film as one of the most personal and spiritually significant projects of his career — one that he believes “came from God.”
A Story Born from Faith and Memory
In an interview with PTI, Kaushik revealed that Mahavatar has been years in the making and is inspired by his childhood experiences in Arunachal Pradesh. “This film is a very big responsibility for me in my career. It has come from God because this character has been with me since childhood. We used to live next to the Parashuram Kund in Arunachal Pradesh and visited it often. This was a ritual at our home, and every visit would fascinate me deeply,” Kaushik said.
The filmmaker shared that while he had always wanted to tell this story, he initially struggled with how to translate its grandeur onto the big screen. “I didn’t know how to approach it because it needed significant resources and extensive VFX. I also wanted to ensure it remained true to the vision in my mind,” he explained. Preparations for the project — including set design and costume work — are already underway, with filming expected to begin in 2026 once Vicky Kaushal wraps up his current commitments.
Vicky Kaushal as the Chosen One
Kaushik expressed his admiration for Vicky Kaushal, calling him the perfect choice for the role. “Whenever I meet him, I see a lot of purity in him. He is the best person to portray this character,” he said. The collaboration marks a new creative chapter for both, as they step into mythological storytelling on an ambitious scale.
Beyond the Horror-Comedy Universe
While Kaushik has become synonymous with Maddock Films’ horror-comedy universe — having directed Stree and Bhediya and produced films like Munjya and Thamma — he says Mahavatar is his way of exploring new creative territories. “That’s why I am working on Mahavatar and that’s why I directed Bala. I am producing other films as well. But I cannot leave the horror-comedy universe because people have showered so much love on it. I cannot ignore that responsibility,” he noted.
The director’s next production, Shakti Shalini, starring Saiyaara actor Aneet Padda, will expand the Maddock horror-comedy world even further.
A Vision Rooted in Devotion and Destiny
For Amar Kaushik, Mahavatar isn’t just another film — it’s a spiritual journey and an act of faith. With a blend of mythological depth and cinematic ambition, the film promises to explore divinity, destiny, and human strength on a scale unlike anything he’s done before. As he summed up, “I feel a deep sense of commitment to the audience that has embraced my brand of storytelling. I intend to keep building on that legacy — with all my heart.”
