Diljit Dosanjh to play Param Vir Chakra hero Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon in JP Dutta’s Border 2 with Sunny Deol and Varun Dhawan. Releases Republic Day 2026.

Diljit Dosanjh will portray Param Vir Chakra recipient Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon in JP Dutta’s Border 2, joining Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty in the sequel to the 1997 classic.
Nearly three decades after JP Dutta’s Border (1997) immortalised the Battle of Longewala on the big screen, the saga continues. This time, it’s JP Dutta’s daughter Nidhi Dutta, who joins hands with Anurag Singh to direct Border 2, a stirring war epic that revisits the events leading to the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War—a conflict that changed the map of South Asia forever.
While the original film captured the grit of soldiers stationed along the Rajasthan border, Border 2 aims to highlight the unsung heroes who fought for the liberation of Bangladesh and helped India secure one of its most decisive victories in history.
Sunny Deol Reprises His Iconic Role
Returning to his legendary role, Sunny Deol once again steps into the boots of Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri, the fearless commander who inspired a generation with his courage in Border. Sources reveal that Deol’s reprisal will serve as a bridge between the two films, anchoring the emotional and historical continuity of the saga.
Diljit Dosanjh Joins the Cast as Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon
The sequel will also introduce audiences to one of India’s most revered war heroes — Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, portrayed by Diljit Dosanjh. Sekhon was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry honour, for his unmatched bravery during the 1971 war.
On December 14, 1971, when six Pakistani Sabre jets attacked the Srinagar airfield, Sekhon — stationed as a Gnat pilot — took off under heavy fire. Engaging the enemy mid-air, he managed to destroy one Sabre jet and severely damage another before being outnumbered. Despite overwhelming odds, Sekhon fought till his last breath, defending his base with indomitable spirit and sacrifice.
A Star-Studded Ensemble and Nostalgic Music
Joining Sunny Deol and Diljit Dosanjh are Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, Sonam Bajwa, Paramvir Singh Cheema, and Medha Rana, among others. The film promises a gripping mix of high-octane battle sequences, emotional storytelling, and unforgettable patriotism.
Adding to the nostalgia, Border 2 will bring back the timeless anthem “Sandese Aate Hai”, sung once again by Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod. The song, which continues to echo through generations, will serve as a powerful emotional thread connecting the past to the present.
Release and Expectations
Currently in post-production, Border 2 is slated for a Republic Day 2026 release — a fitting date for a film that celebrates the bravery, resilience, and selflessness of India’s armed forces. With its emotional core and scale-driven storytelling, the film aims to reignite the pride and patriotism that Border first sparked nearly 30 years ago.
As producer JP Dutta’s cinematic legacy passes into the capable hands of Nidhi Dutta, Border 2 stands poised to become not just a sequel — but a salute to the spirit of every soldier who fought for the nation’s honour.
