Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929. She was the eldest daughter of Pt. Deenanath Mangeshkar, a renowned Marathi theatre artist and Hindustani classical vocalist.
Lata Mangeshkar began receiving singing lessons from her father at the age of five and even took part in some of his stage plays during her childhood.
She lost her father when she was just 13, right at the cusp of starting her musical journey. As the eldest among five siblings, the responsibility of supporting the family fell on her shoulders.
Among her many collaborations, Lata ji enjoyed singing with Kishore Kumar the most, affectionately calling him “Kishoreda.” Recalling their time together, she once said, “He would make me laugh so much that I could barely sing. I had to tell him—Kishorda, pehle gana phir masti.”
Over a career spanning more than seven decades, the legendary singer lent her voice to over 30,000 songs, earning the iconic title of the Nightingale of India.
Lata Mangeshkar received numerous awards and honours, including the Bharat Ratna—India’s highest civilian award—as well as the Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989), Maharashtra Bhushan Award (1997), NTR National Award (1999), Legion of Honour (2007), and ANR National Award (2009).
The Mangeshkar family itself is a treasure trove of talent—her siblings Asha, Usha, Meena, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar are all acclaimed artists who have often collaborated on projects together.
In 1974, the Guinness Book of Records recognised her as the most recorded artist in history. That same year, she became the first Indian artist to perform at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall, marking her international debut with a sold-out concert.
Beyond music, Lata Mangeshkar devoted herself to several philanthropic and social causes, including extending support to Indian soldiers during the 1962 Sino-Indian war.
