Lola Tung opens up about filming her intimate scene with co-star Christopher Briney.
After three seasons of anticipation, Belly (Lola Tung) and Conrad (Christopher Briney) finally reunited in the finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Their romance reached a new level with a passionate sequence that fans had been waiting for — and Tung has now revealed what it was like to film it.
The Paris-set finale gave Team Conrad the closure they craved. Belly and Conrad spent a day exploring the city before emotions boiled over into an extended sex scene that moved from a taxi to a hallway and ultimately Belly’s bedroom. Audiences at the Théâtre Marigny premiere in Paris were left screaming during the moment, but Tung and Briney weren’t present in the theater to witness the reaction.
Why Lola Tung Avoided Watching The Scene With Her Mom
Instead of sitting through the big reveal, Tung and Briney slipped away to a nearby bar. What made it even more nerve-wracking for Tung was that her mother stayed back in the theater to watch. “My mom’s always been really supportive and understands that it’s all part of the job and art,” Tung shared. “It was really, really nice that she was there.”
For Tung, the support of her family made the moment easier, even though she admitted she didn’t want to watch the scene alongside her mom. She stressed how grateful she felt that her mother appreciated her craft and didn’t judge her for portraying an intimate moment on-screen.
Jenny Han’s Choice To Add A Mature Storyline
Interestingly, the scene never existed in Jenny Han’s original book trilogy. Han explained that it was a conscious choice to show a mature, safe, and consensual moment between Belly and Conrad. Tung praised the decision, noting it was “important to show enthusiastic and normal experiences for young women.”
The creators also ensured comfort on set by bringing in an intimacy coordinator and keeping communication open throughout. Both Tung and Briney credited the team for handling the shoot with care and sensitivity.
The finale stayed true to the spirit of Han’s final book, We’ll Always Have Summer, with Conrad and Belly ultimately choosing each other after years of emotional turbulence but not without the drama, heartbreak, and declarations of love that fans have come to expect.
