Robo Shankar’s sudden demise leaves Tamil film industry in shock.

Tamil actor and comedian Robo Shankar passed away on Thursday, September 18, in Chennai. He was 46. The actor, who reportedly collapsed on the sets of a film, had been admitted to a private hospital a few days earlier. Reports suggest he was diagnosed with renal failure. His condition worsened on Wednesday, and he was shifted to the ICU before breathing his last at around 8:30 PM.

Born in Madurai, Shankar earned his nickname ‘Robo’ for his signature robot-style dance moves. After starting with smaller roles in the 2000s, he rose to fame through Kalakka Povathu Yaaru, the Star Vijay comedy show that showcased his timing and unique body language. His big break came with films like Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, the latter earning him widespread recognition.

A Career Filled With Memorable Roles

Over the years, Robo Shankar became a familiar face in Tamil cinema, featuring in hits like Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran, Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru, Singam 3, Viswasam, and Cobra. Among his roles, fans continue to remember his hilarious performance in Dhanush’s Maari as one of his finest screen outings.

Though his career was briefly interrupted due to prolonged treatment for jaundice, Shankar made a strong comeback. Fans had earlier expressed worry after his drastic weight loss during illness. In 2023, he made headlines when he was booked for housing two Alexandrine parakeets, a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Despite controversies, Shankar bounced back, appearing in films like Are You Ok Baby?, Singapore Saloon and Jolly O Gymkhana. His most recent appearance was in the comedy-drama Sotta Sotta Nanaiyuthu, released earlier this year.

Family, Fans And Industry In Mourning

Robo Shankar is survived by his wife, actor Priyanka Shankar, and his daughter, actor-influencer Indraja Shankar. His sudden passing has shocked the Tamil film industry and his vast fan base.

Since the announcement of his death, social media has been flooded with tributes. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan penned an emotional note on X, remembering Shankar’s contribution to cinema and the joy he brought to audiences. Fans, colleagues, and admirers continue to pour in condolences, celebrating his legacy as one of Tamil cinema’s most loved comedians.
