Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have called off their engagement.
After five years together, Vampire Diaries actress Nina Dobrev and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White have ended their engagement. PEOPLE confirms that the decision was mutual, made with love and deep respect. The split marks the conclusion of a relationship that began in 2019 and blossomed into one of Hollywood’s admired couples.
The couple, last seen together on August 31, 2025, in Los Angeles holding hands while running errands, have chosen to part ways quietly. Just a week later, Dobrev made a public appearance at the Eternity premiere during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival without her 5-carat diamond engagement ring. She has also removed the engagement post that had been pinned to the top of her Instagram since White proposed in October 2024.
From Chance Meeting to Romance
White, 39, and Dobrev, 36, first crossed paths in 2012 at an awards show but didn’t truly connect until seven years later at a Tony Robbins event in Florida. Recalling their first dinner together after the event, White told PEOPLE in January 2022 that he “actually didn’t know anything about [Dobrev]” at the time. He was amused when staffers repeatedly asked for photos with her. “I was like, ‘What’s happening? What’s going on?’ It was actually really funny,” he said.
The pair began dating in 2019 and moved in together at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. White made their relationship Instagram official in May 2020, sharing snapshots of Dobrev giving him a quarantine haircut. “Nina’s just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me,” White shared. “Through the pandemic, she was a lifesaver — she really made that time in my life special.”
A Public Love Story Ends
Over the years, Dobrev and White became a fixture on red carpets and social media, offering glimpses into their life together. From luxurious vacations abroad to festival nights at Coachella, the couple appeared inseparable. In 2022, Dobrev was a pillar of support as White competed in his fifth and final Winter Olympics in Beijing, an event he later described as “emotional” and “overwhelming.”
Despite the breakup, sources emphasise that the split was amicable. The pair reportedly maintain mutual admiration for one another, valuing the years they shared and the memories they created. While fans may be disappointed, the respectful manner in which Dobrev and White have handled their separation underscores the maturity of their relationship.
