Documentaries in India are rarely given a grand theatrical release, but Unbroken: The Unmukt Chand Story is set to change that. The film, based on the life of cricketer Unmukt Chand, will hit theatres nationwide on September 12 in collaboration with PVR, bringing to the big screen a story of resilience, heartbreak, and redemption.

A Cricketer’s Journey Beyond the Field

Directed by Raghav Khanna and produced by Riverland Entertainment and Tudip Entertainment, Unbroken traces the life of Unmukt Chand, the former Indian Under-19 captain who led the team to World Cup glory. Once hailed as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Chand’s career took unexpected turns, forcing him to find new ground both in life and sport.

Director Khanna emphasizes that the story goes beyond cricket. “Unmukt’s story is not just limited to cricket. It is a story of rising from broken dreams, showing courage, and finding a second chance in life. His journey connects with every person who does not lose hope despite difficulties,” he shared.

Music as a Narrative Force

In a groundbreaking move, Zee Music has partnered to release the music of the documentary, underlining the importance of songs and sound in storytelling. “Some emotions could only be expressed through songs and music. Therefore, music plays a crucial role in the documentary. And we see the documentary as a more integrated entertainment unit,” Khanna explained.

The inclusion of music aims to heighten the cinematic experience of the film, ensuring that audiences walk away with both an emotional and sensory connection to Chand’s story.

Why Theatres Matter for Documentaries

While most documentaries in India find their homes on OTT platforms, Khanna insisted on a theatrical release. “Streaming has brought documentaries into the mainstream, but releasing them in theatres will add a new dimension to this art form. I feel a documentary can also give as much of a cinematic experience as a fiction film,” he said.

Khanna, who has previously made a documentary on filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, draws a sharp contrast: “Rajamouli sir is in the global spotlight, while Unmukt’s journey is completely different. A player who reached the pinnacle but is on the sidelines today. This is what makes his story inspirational.”

A Story of Struggle, Faith, and Dreams

The producers behind Unbroken include Deepti Agarwal, Jaishree Khanna, Tushar Upshankar, and Raghav Khanna, with Priyanka Chaudhary as co-producer. Together, they aim to present not just a sports documentary but a human story of grit, struggle, and rediscovery.

Khanna summed up the spirit of the film: “Documentary-making has grown rapidly in India in the last decade. Now, filmmakers must bring stories that are both entertaining and impactful. The trust of the audience and distributors will make this genre commercially viable for a long time to come.”

Unbroken: The Unmukt Chand Story will thus not only showcase the rise and fall of a cricketer but also celebrate the universal spirit of resilience that continues to inspire countless dreamers.
