Fans of heavy metal have a huge reason to tune in to the MTV Video Music Awards 2025. The show will celebrate the life and legacy of legendary Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne with a one-of-a-kind tribute performance. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry will take the stage alongside Yungblud and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt to perform a medley of Osbourne’s biggest hits.
The performance will serve as a powerful homage to the “Prince of Darkness,” whose impact on the music industry transcended generations. It comes just weeks after Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, following a heart attack. He was 76 years old.
Remembering Ozzy Osbourne
Osbourne’s death certificate revealed that the rock legend had been battling coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease. His daughter, Aimée Rose Osbourne, filed the certificate in London, where the musician had been living. The announcement of the VMAs tribute has been met with an emotional response from fans, who are eager to see fellow rock icons celebrate Osbourne’s timeless contributions.
Interestingly, just weeks before his passing, Osbourne had shared the stage with Yungblud, Tyler, and Bettencourt during his Back to the Beginning concert. That powerful night now stands as one of his final live collaborations, making their upcoming VMAs performance all the more poignant.
Ozzy’s Legacy With MTV
Osbourne’s association with MTV stretches back decades. In the 1980s, he became a fixture on Headbanger’s Ball, a program that brought metal into the mainstream. His connection to the network grew stronger in 2002 with the launch of The Osbournes, a reality show chronicling the chaotic yet endearing family life of Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly, and Jack. The show became a cultural phenomenon and even won the Emmy for Outstanding Non-Fiction Program (Reality) in 2002. It ran until 2005, cementing Osbourne’s influence not just as a musician but also as a pop culture icon.
In 2004, MTV also aired Battle for Ozzfest, a reality competition where unsigned bands competed for a coveted spot in the legendary Ozzfest lineup. These projects showcased Osbourne’s enduring relationship with MTV and his role in shaping music television.
