Macaulay Culkin has been unveiling deeply personal insights from his life in Colin Hanks’ new documentary, John Candy: I Like Me. The movie is a portrait of the Canadian actor John Candy, who passed away at 43 after suffering a heart attack in 1994. The Home Alone star, who shared a profound relationship with Candy, talked about the late star’s paternal presence in his life.
Macaulay Culkin opened up about his experience of working with his infamous on-screen uncle, John Candy, in the 1989 John Hughes film Uncle Buck. There, the actor recalled the late actor, mentioning, “I think he always had that really great instinct.
Macaulay Culkin Remembers John Candy In The New Documentary
Culkin, considered one of the most successful child actors of the 1990s, further discussed his friendship with the late actor. He also recalled that Candy was the first person to notice the monstrous side of his father, Kit Culkin, a former American stage actor. “I think he (Candy) saw. Listen, even before the wave crested and the Home Alone stuff was happening, it was not hard to see how difficult my father was. It was no secret. He (Kit Culkin) was already a monster,” Culkin remembered.
He continued, “All of a sudden, the fame and the money came, and he (Kit Culkin) became an infamous monster. He was already not a good guy,” adding the late actor’s reaction upon this, “I think John was looking a little side-eyed, like, ‘Is everything alright over there? You doing good? Good day? Everything’s alright? Everything good at home? Alright’.”
Macaulay Culkin On John Candy’s Paternal Presence
The Richie Rich star then mentioned how he felt Candy had a “paternal” presence for him when the latter started looking for the then little kid. Unfortunately, Candy left for his heavenly abode, leaving a huge void in Culkin’s life, unlike many. “It doesn’t happen that often. It actually happened less as time went on. I wish I got more of that in my life. It’s important that I remember that. I remember John caring when not a lot of people did,” he recalled.
Recalling Candy’s relationship with him while filming their movie together, Culkin shared that while some actors “don’t know how or don’t like to work with kids” because they’re “tricky to work with, John was always really kind, and really good” with him and his on-screen sister, Gaby Hoffman.

John Candy: I Like Me will be available on Prime Video since October 10. Co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Company Name, and Maximum Effort, in association with Zipper Bros Films, the documentary features rare and never-before-seen archive footage, outtakes, private home videos, audio commentary, and interviews provided by the late actor’s friends and family.
