Shanthi Priya, one of the most recognised actresses of the 1990s, carved out a place for herself in Hindi cinema with her innocence and strong performances. Originally from the South Indian film industry, she entered Bollywood with the 1991 film Saugandh, opposite Akshay Kumar, who was also making his debut as a lead actor. While the film failed to create much impact at the box office, it gave Shanthi Priya recognition and marked the beginning of Akshay Kumar’s journey to superstardom.
Despite starting her career alongside a future superstar, Shanthi Priya’s acting journey was short-lived. After working with big names such as Jackie Shroff and Jaya Prada in Mere Sajna Saath Nibhana (1992), she gradually stepped away from the spotlight. Known for her simplicity, the actress faced many personal and professional struggles. Her husband’s untimely death cast a shadow over her career, and she was often subjected to criticism and taunts.
In April 2025, Shanthi Priya surprised her fans by shaving her head. Sharing photographs of her bald look, she paid tribute to her late husband Siddharth Roy by wearing his blazer. However, the move invited mixed reactions, with some accusing her of seeking attention. Addressing the criticism in an interview with Zoom, the actress explained her decision.
“Often people get highlights done and also get their hair cut. In such a situation, I thought why not this, when men can do this, then why can’t we. If they grow hair, then they do not keep style, then the style, the hair will grow back. I tried this look of mine thinking this only,” she said.
Now, after 25 years, Shanthi Priya is preparing for a comeback. She will be seen playing the role of a mother in Varsha Bharat’s Badgirl, which is set to release on September 5. Her return marks a new chapter in a career that once began with promise, took an unexpected pause, and is now ready for revival.
