The television and film industry is mourning the loss of Prem Sagar, son of legendary Ramayan director Ramanand Sagar, who passed away at the age of 84. Known for his exceptional cinematography and for carrying forward the Sagar legacy, Prem Sagar played a crucial role in shaping Indian television through iconic shows like Ramayan, Shri Krishna, and Vikram Aur Betaal.

The Final Hours

According to reports, Prem Sagar breathed his last at 10 am on Monday. A source told NDTV that the veteran had been ailing for some time and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. “He had been unwell for some time and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. On Sunday, doctors advised that he be taken home. He passed away this morning. The cremation will be held today at 3 pm at Pawan Hans cremation ground in Mumbai,” the source revealed.

His Journey And Legacy

An alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Prem Sagar graduated in 1968 with rigorous training in cinematography. Soon after, he entered the industry and became one of the creative pillars of Sagar Productions, the banner founded by his father, Ramanand Sagar.

His mastery of the lens brought several unforgettable projects to life. Beyond Ramayan—a cultural milestone in Indian television—he also helmed the visuals for Shri Krishna and Vikram Aur Betaal, shows that continue to hold nostalgic value for audiences. His filmography as a cinematographer includes Hindi films like Aankhen, Lalkaar, and Charas, where he worked with stalwarts such as Dharmendra and Hema Malini.

Tributes From The Industry

As news of his passing spread, tributes began pouring in. Actor Sunil Lehri, who famously played Lakshman in Ramayan, expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Absolutely shocking news, we lost Prem Sagar Ji, son of Ramanand Sagar Ji of Ramayan. Om Shanti.”

Prem Sagar is survived by his son, Shiv, who has also stepped into the world of production. His passing is seen not just as a personal loss to his family but as the end of an era that linked Ramanand Sagar’s timeless productions to the evolving landscape of Indian entertainment.

With his demise, Indian television has lost yet another craftsman who quietly but powerfully shaped the way stories were told on screen. His contribution will continue to live on through the epics and memories he helped bring to life.
