Seoul authorities have booked South Korean singer PSY, internationally renowned for his 2012 global hit Gangnam Style, for allegedly breaching the country’s Medical Service Act. The Seodaemun Police Station confirmed that the singer is under investigation for obtaining prescriptions for psychotropic drugs without undergoing proper in-person medical examinations.

PSY, whose Gangnam Style became a viral sensation and catapulted K-pop onto the global stage, has been a prominent figure in the music industry for over a decade. The track, famous for its catchy rhythm and iconic horse-riding dance, remains one of the most-watched videos on YouTube, cementing PSY’s international fame.

According to reports, PSY received prescriptions for Xanax, commonly used to treat anxiety disorders, and Stilnox, prescribed for short-term insomnia, from a general hospital in Seoul starting in 2022. Both medications are strictly regulated in South Korea and require direct supervision by licensed doctors. Sources indicate that PSY’s manager frequently collected the drugs on his behalf.

In response to the allegations, PSY’s agency, P NATION, issued a statement on August 28 acknowledging lapses while defending the singer’s medical use of the drugs. “It was clearly a mistake and lapse in judgment to have a prescription sleeping pill collected on his behalf. We sincerely apologise,” the agency said.

The statement added further context regarding the singer’s health: “PSY has been diagnosed with chronic sleep disorder and has been taking sleeping medication in accordance with his doctor’s prescription. His use of sleeping pills has always been under medical supervision, with prescriptions given for the appropriate dosage.”

P NATION also addressed the issue of third-party collection: “However, in the process, there were cases where a third party collected the sleeping pills on his behalf, and police are currently conducting an investigation. Once again, we apologise for causing concern.”

Authorities are examining both PSY and the prescribing doctor as part of the ongoing probe. The doctor has denied any misconduct, stating that the treatment was conducted remotely and asserting that no illegal activity took place during the prescription process.
