Sunidhi Chauhan opens up about her early marriage, divorce, and struggles with payment for songs, revealing the hurdles behind her long music career.

Sunidhi Chauhan, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated playback singers, has revealed the challenges she faced in both her personal life and career. At just 18, she married choreographer Bobby Khan, going against her parents’ wishes. But the marriage didn’t last, ending within a year, and Sunidhi returned home to reconcile with her family.
The two had reportedly fallen in love while working on the song Pehla Nasha. Despite initial happiness, “religious differences caused a rift in their marriage. Bobby Khan listened to his family and ended his relationship with Sunidhi,” according to media reports.
After her divorce in 2003, Sunidhi was left without a home or financial stability. Composer Anu Malik supported her through this difficult phase, helping her rebuild her career.
Love came again in 2012 when she married composer Hitesh Sonik after dating for over two years. The couple now has a son, Tej, and have maintained a stable personal life.
Sunidhi has also spoken candidly about the professional challenges she faced, particularly regarding payment for her songs. On Raj Shamani’s podcast in 2024, she said, “Har koi nahi deta, aisa nahi hai. Jab aab us stature ke ho jaate hai tab unko dena padta hai kyuki tab aap yeh keh sakte hai ki mai gaaunga tab jab paise milenge. Lekin jab aapko khud lagta hai ki mujhe sirf gaana hai abhi paise theek hai. It is a choice that you make. So, you can not blame ki paise ni milte.”
She added, “I have not got money for many movies. Even today, when I don’t get, it does not mean they don’t give me. They ask and I choose not to take. Because mujhe aisa lagta hai ki ek gaane ke liye mera mann nahi kar raha paise lene ka.”
Sunidhi Chauhan has delivered some of Bollywood’s most iconic tracks over her two-decade-long career. Her powerful vocals brought life to hits such as Sheila Ki Jawani from Tees Maar Khan, Kamli from Dhoom 3, Desi Girl from Dostana, Beedi from Omkara, Sajanaji Vaari from Bunty Aur Babli 2, and Dance Pe Chance from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Known for her versatility, she has also sung soulful numbers like Chor Bazaari from Love Aaj Kal and Ishq Sufiyana from The Dirty Picture.
