Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is playing for Kochi Blue Tigers in the 2025 edition of the Kerala Cricket League. On Sunday (August 25), the 30-year-old batter opened the innings for the Saly Samson-led side in the 237-run chase against Aries Kollam Sailors at Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram and scored a century in just 42 balls.

By scoring a century as an opener, that too in 42 balls, Samson has presented a strong case for the opener’s role in the Asia Cup 2025.

Samson played as an opener for India in his last three T20I series, but the inclusion of Shubman Gill as vice-captain in the Asia Cup 2025 squad last week put his place as opener in jeopardy. Many experts felt that Gill will open the innings with world No. 1 T20I batter Abhishek Sharma, and Samson will be left out.

In the ongoing match, before completing his century in 42 balls, Samson crossed the 50-run mark in just 16 balls. He has hammered 13 fours and 5 sixes so far.

He got out after making 121 runs from 51 balls. He scored 14 fours and 7 sixes during his fighting knock.

In the last match, Sanju batted at No. 6 but could only manage to score 13 runs from 22 balls.

Samson’s record as opener for India in T20Is

Samson has played 17 T20Is for India as an opener so far and, with the help of three centuries and one fifty, scored 522 runs. In 2024, Samson entered his name in the history books by becoming the first cricketer in the world to score three T20I centuries in a calendar year.

On October 12, 2024, Samson scored 111 runs from 47 balls against Bangladesh in Hyderabad. In his next T20I against South Africa in Durban on November 8, 2024, Samson amassed a total of 107 runs from 50 balls. In that match he hammered 7 fours and 10 sixes.

In the last match of the away series against the Proteas in Johannesburg on November 15, Samson remained unbeaten on 109 runs from 56 balls. In that fixture he scored six fours and nine sixes and added 210 runs for the second wicket with Tilak Varma (120 runs from 47 balls).
