Veteran Actor Jackie Shroff has opened up about one of the most tragic periods of his life, the loss of his older brother. Talking to Lehren Retro, the actor spoke about how he was only 10 years old when he watched his 17-year-old brother die attempting to save a friend.
I saw these and I saw my daddy go or saw my brother… so yeah, so I’ve seen it with my eyes and my mother. I was 10 years old and I saw it, and you remember it, of course. How can we forget such incidents?” Jackie said, remembering how the memory has stayed imprinted in his heart.
A Horrible Day That Changed Everything
Jackie vividly recalled the incident where his brother drowned trying to save someone from the water. “He drowned. He was trying to save somebody without learning how to swim, and he just pulled him. Some people came and pulled him out, but it was too late,” he explained.
The actor further remembered an eerie detail of the day. His father, who was an astrologer by profession, had foretold that the day was not good. “My father was an astrologer. He said, ‘Today is a bad day. Don’t go out.’ But he went out. He didn’t go to work, though. He used to work in Century Mills as a millhand. And I saw him drowning,” Jackie reminisced, recounting the poignant moment.
Holding His Brother’s Memory With Pride
Despite the tragedy, Jackie Shroff still holds his brother’s memory with great pride. “He was 17, I was 10… so obviously, yeah, he was the hero. He did a lot of good things out there for his friends. He gave his life for a friend, which is huge. That’s got guts and some kind of loyalty to friends,” he said.
Though pain continues to remain, Jackie feels that his brother’s act of self-sacrifice is what amounts to actual courage. The memory to him is as much a wound as a source of inspiration.
Living With Trauma
Looking back on grief and loss, Jackie confessed that the trauma never actually disappears. “Trauma is inside, it’s still inside… I don’t know where it is. I don’t want to dig it out. I love my mother the most, but I couldn’t go with her. In my heart, I feel it, I manifested, I dream of my mother,” he testified with emotion.
His words reflect how much the memories of his childhood still impact his life and personality even now.
Jackie Shroff’s Journey Continues
On the professional front, Jackie Shroff was seen most recently in Singham Again, where he essayed a menacing villain. Even though his career has been long and successful, his personal tales bring out a side of him that is hardly seen by fans — that of resilience tempered by great loss.
The actor also recently went back to his school days, sharing how he had lied to his girlfriend that he lived in a chawl, illustrating how his humble beginnings influenced his life path.
