Speaking up against stereotypes
Alongside her photoshoot buzz, Fatima opened up during her Filmfare interview about how female roles in Bollywood are often stereotyped. After her breakthrough role in Dangal, she revealed being offered several “empowered” roles, but most carried the cliché of aggressive women who “hate men.”
“When people think of strong women, they think of aggressive women. I don’t know why! Just because we know what we want and we voice for equality does not mean we will fight with men, or we want to fight, or we want to smoke a cigarette. The idea is very stereotypical,” Fatima explained.
She added that empowerment should not always be portrayed through aggression, but through authenticity, intelligence, and individuality.
