Veteran Marathi actress Jyoti Chandekar passed away on Saturday at the age of 68. Her demise has sent a shockwave through the entire film industry. Her funeral took place today, August 17, at 11 a.m., and MNS Chief Raj Thackeray also paid his respects. A video of Tejaswini Pandit is now circulating on social media, showing her crying inconsolably as she performed the last rites of her mother.

The video, shared by Marathi news channel Sakal, shows her fulfilling all the duties of a brave daughter as she performed the rituals and later broke down in tears while looking at her mother’s body.

After the demise of the veteran actress, her daughter shared the heartbreaking news. In a statement she shared in Marathi: “It is with deep sorrow that I share the news that our mother, the esteemed and beloved actress Mrs. Jyoti Chandekar Pandit, who lived life on her own terms and always smiled wholeheartedly, passed away today, 16th August, at the age of 68 after a brief illness.”

In 2024, while shooting for Tharala Tar Mag, Jyoti Chandekar fell ill on set due to low sodium levels. She was hospitalised and had to take a break of nearly two months before returning. Recalling the experience in an interview with The Craft, she said, “It felt like I literally came back from the brink of death. No production waits two months for a single actor. But everyone waited for me. I wasn’t working for two months, yet they managed everything so beautifully that it still felt like Poorna Aaji… Aaji is here. No one let my absence be felt.”

Jyoti Chandekar enjoyed a distinguished acting career spanning over five decades, beginning as a child artiste around the age of 12. She delivered memorable performances in acclaimed Marathi films such as Mee Sindhutai Sapkal (2010), where she portrayed the mother of Sindhutai, and Guru (2016). Her nuanced roles in Dholki (2015), Paulwaat, Duniya Kari Salaam, and Ticha Umbartha (2015) further solidified her versatility.

In the 2023 acclaimed remake Shyamchi Aai, she brought emotional depth to the film based on Sane Guruji’s autobiography. On television, she became a beloved figure as “Poorna Aaji” in Tharala Tar Mag (2022) and starred in popular series like Tu Saubhagyavati Ho (2012) and Chhatriwali (2018). Her contributions were often lauded – she received the Zee Chitra Gaurav Puraskar for Best Supporting Actress multiple times, including for Sukhant, Paulwaat, and Ticha Umbartha.
