Ramesh Sippy on Jai-Veeru’s bromance in Sholay

When Ramesh Sippy was informed that the audience from the current generation is in awe of the bromance between Jai and Veeru, he told IANS, “It’s up to people. We have not suggested anything like this. It was a good friendship. And we showed that both have their own romantic interests (with other women). There was no such tendency”.

He also said, “But if someone hugs you with love, or sits with you on a motorcycle, it does not mean that there is something else in it”.

All you need to know about Sholay

Sholay is one of the most iconic films in Indian cinema, directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by GP Sippy. Often hailed as a “curry Western,” the film blends action, drama, romance, and comedy against the backdrop of rural India.

The story follows two small-time criminals, Jai and Veeru (played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra), hired by a retired police officer, Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar), to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Hema Malini as Basanti and Jaya Bhaduri as Radha added emotional depth, while Asrani, Jagdeep, and AK Hangal delivered memorable supporting performances.

Known for its powerful dialogues, unforgettable music by RD Burman, and larger-than-life characters, Sholay, became a blockbuster that has transcended generations, solidifying its place as a cultural milestone in India’s cinematic history.
