Akash Deep will miss the 2025 Duleep Trophy due to discomforts from the India-England Test series. Mukhtar Hussain replaces him in East Zone’s squad.

Star Indian fast bowler Akash Deep will not play in the 2025 edition of the Duleep Trophy, which is set to take place in Bengaluru from August 28 to September 11. According to a report in the Times of India on Wednesday (August 13), the 28-year-old fast bowler from Bihar, who represents Bengal in domestic cricket, will miss the upcoming six-team tournament due to discomforts experienced during the recently concluded five-match Test series between India and England.
Akash Deep played three Tests for India in England and picked up 13 wickets. He was named in East Zone’s squad last week but now will be replaced by Assam pacer Mukhtar Hussain.
Mukhtar has played 40 first-class matches so far and has dismissed 132 batters in addition to scoring 580 runs with the bat in 61 innings.
In Akash’s absence, Mohammed Shami will lead the bowling attack for the Ishan Kishan-led side and will have Bengal pacer Mukesh Kumar for support.
According to the report, “The exact reason for Akash Deep’s absence remains undisclosed, though it may be related to potential fitness concerns following the demanding Test series against England.”

Akash Deep’s record in Tests
Akash Deep made his Test debut for India against England in Ranchi on February 23, 2024, and picked up three wickets in the first innings. He has played a total of 10 Test matches so far and has dismissed 28 batters. Of his 28 wickets, 10 alone came in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which was played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 2 to 6.
In the first innings of the second India-England Test, Akash Deep bowled 20 overs and picked up 4 wickets for 88 runs. In the second innings, he dismissed six English batters for 99 runs in 21.1 overs.
The figures of 10 for 187 runs in 41.1 overs by Akash Deep in the Birmingham Test are the best ever by an Indian bowler in a red-ball match played in England.
