The Madhya Pradesh government has named celebrated music composer trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and acclaimed playback singer Sonu Nigam as recipients of the National Lata Mangeshkar Award for 2024 and 2025, respectively. The honours recognise outstanding contributions to Indian music and are among the state’s most prestigious cultural accolades.
According to the state culture department, the Lata Mangeshkar Award will be presented in Indore, the birthplace of the iconic singer, on September 28. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy will receive the 2024 honour, while Sonu Nigam will be felicitated for 2025.
In a parallel announcement, lyricist Prasoon Joshi and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali have been named as the winners of the National Kishore Kumar Award for 2024 and 2025, respectively. These awards will be presented in Khandwa, the birthplace of Kishore Kumar, on October 13.
Instituted to celebrate artistic excellence, the National Lata Mangeshkar Award honours exceptional talent in music direction and singing, while the National Kishore Kumar Award recognises achievements in cinema, including lyric writing and filmmaking. Both awards serve as a tribute to the enduring legacies of two of India’s most celebrated performers.
Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy is a renowned Indian musical trio comprising Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, and Loy Mendonsa. Over their career, they have composed music for more than 50 soundtracks in five languages — Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, and English. Widely regarded among India’s most critically acclaimed music directors, the trio has earned numerous honours, including National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards, and IIFA Awards.
Often nicknamed the “Amar Akbar Anthony” of Hindi film music, they are celebrated for iconic compositions in films such as Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), and Dil Dhadakne Do (2015).
Sonu Sood is an Indian actor, film producer, model, and philanthropist who has worked extensively in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil cinema. Widely recognised for portraying strong negative roles on screen, he is equally celebrated for his humanitarian initiatives, particularly his large-scale relief efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Over his career, Sood has earned several accolades, including the Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Award for Best Villain and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Telugu for the blockbuster Arundhati (2009). In 2010, he won both the Apsara Award and the IIFA Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role for Dabangg. He later received the SIIMA Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role (Telugu) for Julayi (2012).
