Musk shared the update as GPT 5 launch was confirmed by OpenAI

ChatGPT 5 launch has people excited, not just because it is the new AI model from Sam Altman’s OpenAI but also for its claims of being the most powerful version yet. The most obvious rival for GPT 5 comes from Google and Elon Musk’s xAI startup.

And with the release of ChatGPT-5, Musk has been publicly sharing his views on the new model and how it compares with their own Grok 4 AI model which is available via X and Grok AI app on mobile and web.

The Musk and Altman battle has been well documented over the years, especially with their history of working together and now being rivals. ChatGPT and Grok will be making the headlines and the comparisons have already started since the new AI model has been officially rolled out this week.

ChatGPT 5 Launch: Musk Confirms Grok 5 Release Timeline

Musk is clearly looking to steal ChatGPT 5’s thunder by talking about the yet-to-release Grok 5 model and giving us a launch timeline. He said in a post on X that Grok 5 will be out before the end of 2025 and it will be ‘crushingly good’. Grok 4 was released in July and xAI called it the world’s most powerful AI model and that was before GPT 5 came out.

Musk even claimed the new AI model can perform levels better than a PhD researcher.

But Grok has faced concerns over its rogue behaviour and supporting anti semitic views, something that OpenAI says GPT 5 will be less prone to with its advanced training. Grok 4 launch brought the new Grok 4 Heavy model, which Musk claims is already much smarter and scores higher than the GPT 5 model. So him saying that Grok 5 will be ‘crushingly good’ makes you wonder how far ahead the AI model will go when it launches.

Musk vs Altman: The AI Battle Continues

One gets a feeling that Musk started xAI to compete with OpenAI which explains the repeated comparisons and the mocking when a new model is released. GPT 5 is promising a host of improvements over GPT4, and the biggest is the lower rate of hallucinations, something we are yet to see from Grok. If the Grok 5 version does manage to bring an upgrade in these aspects then the GPT 5 vs Grok 5 battle will be one to keep an eye on.
