After creating a massive buzz with Past Lives, Oscar-nominated director Celine Song is back with her second feature film, Materialists — a romantic drama wrapped in wit, longing, and a tangled love triangle. Starring Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans, the film explores modern love, the illusion of choice, and the price tag often attached to relationships.
Originally released in theatres on June 13, Materialists is now available to stream — but there’s a twist. The film has dropped on Amazon Prime Video India for rent only, not free with subscription. The official handle confirmed the update, writing, “Everything comes with a price, including love. #MaterialistsOnPrime, Rent Now.”
What’s Materialists About?
In this New York-set romantic comedy, Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a sharp, stylish, and successful matchmaker who knows how to pair people perfectly — except when it comes to herself. Things get complicated when she attends a wedding of a couple she matched. There, she meets Harry (Pedro Pascal), the groom’s wealthy brother who instantly falls for her. But fate has more in store — Lucy also unexpectedly runs into her ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans), a struggling actor now working as a wedding waiter.
Caught between two very different men — one with emotional history, the other with financial security — Lucy is forced to confront what she really wants from love. The film’s tagline might as well be: Would you choose love… or money?
Song based the screenplay on her own experience working as a real-life matchmaker in NYC during the 2010s. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said: “I learned more about people and what’s in their hearts than I have in any other period of my life.” “When asked about their ideal partner, clients often listed height, weight, net worth — all numbers.”
Box Office & Streaming
Made on a $20 million budget, Materialists has grossed over $62 million globally. With strong performances, real-world commentary, and Celine Song’s signature emotional depth, it’s a modern love story with high stakes both romantic and existential.
