Data shows that over 58% of Indian travellers are choosing short domestic trips this year, with destinations close to metro cities experiencing a sharp increase in interest. Places like Alibaug, Karjat, and Igatpuri near Mumbai; Rishikesh and Mussoorie near Delhi, have seen a 40% to 80% surge in accommodation searches compared to last year. Evergreen favourites such as Lonavala, Jaipur, Mahabaleshwar, and Chikmagalur continue to attract high volumes of interest, pointing to a growing appetite for short breaks.
In addition to hill stations, quieter coastal locations are gaining popularity. Destinations like Varkala and Gokarna, along with the perennial favourite Goa, have seen a 10% to 40% rise in travel searches as holidaymakers look for peaceful seaside retreats away from city life.

As far as international destinations are concerned, Indian travellers are showing growing interest in hotspots across the Asia-Pacific region. Thailand has emerged as a top choice, with Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya seeing over a 60% increase in travel searches. These cities offer an ideal mix of vibrant street life, cultural richness, and scenic beaches, making them perfect for short overseas trips.
Moreover, Booking.com revealed the 10 most-searched domestic destinations for the the upcoming long weekend from 14 to 17 August 2025, which include Udaipur, Lonavala, Jaipur, Puducherry, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ooty, Munnar, Kodaikanal, and New Delhi. On the international front, Dubai leads the list, followed by Singapore, Bangkok, London, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Abu Dhabi, Pattaya, and Hong Kong.

Travellers are opting for more homely and flexible accommodations this season. Homestays, guesthouses, villas, and serviced apartments have emerged as top preferences. The Booking.com report suggests that 74% of Indian travellers now favour alternative stays for their comfort and immerse in nature, particularly when travelling with family.
“As Indian travellers plan for the Independence Day long weekend, we are seeing a shift toward more spontaneous, short-haul travel – both within the country and across the APAC region,” said Santosh Kumar, Regional Manager, South Asia at Booking.com. “Whether it’s scenic getaways that are just a drive away, a quick international break or the emerging preference for home stays, we see a preference for flexibility and convenience in terms of travel.”
