Lokah Chapter 1 – Chandra is being hailed as one of the most intriguing films of the year. Directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, the film stars Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead role and has been winning hearts for its star cast and gripping tale. While the spotlight has been shining on its cast and box office success, one name associated with the film is quietly stealing attention. Any guesses? Santhy Balachandran.
An actress-turned-writer, Santhy co-wrote Lokah along with Dominic Arun and her contribution has been key in shaping Malayalam cinema’s first female superhero. With her powerful writing, she brought depth, sensitivity and strength to Chandra, a character inspired by Aithihyamala, Kerala’s beloved folktale collection. This refreshing twist on mythology has not only resonated with Malayalam audiences but also drawn in Telugu and Hindi viewers, making the film a true pan-India success.
A Career Shift From Acting to Writing
Kalyani Priyadarshan, who takes on the lead role in Lokah, has publicly credited Santhy as the “biggest creative force” behind the film. Santhy’s thoughtful writing for the film has been praised by critics, fans and even celebrities for its bold approach and unique storytelling.
Santhy, in a recent post on Instagram, shared how her parents supported her creative journey after she decided to step back from acting to focus on writing. The post struck a chord with fans as it revealed how much she is dedicated to her craft.
A Fascinating Personal Life
Santhy’s personal journey is nothing short of inspiring. Born in Kottayam, she was brought up in various cities across India due to her parents’ transferable jobs. She went on to earn a postgraduate degree in anthropology from Oxford University and also made a mark as a visual artist, holding six solo exhibitions before turning to films.
Later, Sanchy made her acting debut with Tharangam (2017), directed by Dominic Arun. Within years, she went on to sign films like Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Jallikattu, where her role stood out despite being the only female character in a male-dominated story. Her performances in Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte and Hindi debut Gulmohar also won hearts, cementing her status as a talented actress in the film world.
Now, with Lokah Chapter 1 – Chandra collecting over Rs 24.30 crore in just four days, Santhy’s writing is also getting recognition for redefining Malayalam cinema with her work.
