Bengali film Devi Chowdhurani, an epic retelling of the life of India’s first female freedom fighter, illuminated the towering billboards of New York’s Times Square on August 15, marking the first-ever Independence Day unveiling for an Indian film at the iconic location.

Starring Prosenjit Chatterjee as the legendary rebel Bhavani Pathak and Srabanti Chatterjee in the titular role, the film has been generating buzz since its August 13 teaser launch for its sweeping visuals, powerful performances, and unapologetically revolutionary tone. Watch the teaser of Devi Chowdhurani here:

Prosenjit Chatterjee called it a proud moment. He said, “On our Independence Day, the teaser of Devi Chowdhurani, based on Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s tale of India’s first rebellion for freedom, lights up Times Square. This Indo-UK venture is our tribute to the courage and spirit of our people. Very soon, the world will witness it. Bande Mataram.”

Srabanti Chatterjee, who plays Devi Chowdhurani, added, “It’s extremely exciting for our team to see the teaser showcased at Times Square throughout Independence Day 2025. This is a part of our forgotten history, and I’m grateful to my director and producers for such a grand canvas.”

What is the story of Devi Chowdhurani?

As its final frames faded from the Times Square screens, Devi Chowdhurani stood as more than a film—it became a resurrection of the Sanyasi-Fakir rebellion, a story born in Bengal’s soil, tempered in the fires of resistance, and now shared with the world’s most recognisable skyline. Releasing globally this Durga Puja, the film promises to let audiences not just watch history, but feel the pulse of a revolution that still beats strong.

Producers Aparna and Aniruddha Dasgupta (ADited) and Soumyajit Majumdar (LOK) expressed pride in taking Indian stories to a global stage. They said, “Earlier last year, we unveiled our film Joyguru at Times Square during Bengali New Year. Now, for the first time ever, an Indian story blazes across the Times Square screens on Independence Day. Rooted in Bengal yet universal in spirit, this is more than just a film—it’s India’s history meeting the world’s most iconic cultural crossroads.”

Backed by ADited Motion Pictures (USA/India) and LOK Arts Collective (UK/India), the magnum opus holds the distinction of being the first Indian feature to secure official Indo-UK co-production status from both governments. The project is supported by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, NFDC, Film Facilitation Office, and Invest India. National Award-winning filmmaker Subhrajit Mitra directs, with globally renowned composer Pandit Bickram Ghosh providing the score.
