During a recent episode of Farah Khan’s YouTube series, actor Radhikka Madan welcomed the filmmaker into her spacious Mumbai home. While giving the tour, the Delhi-born star revealed that despite living in a bustling city, she still holds on to her small-town roots, including the habit of drinking water from an earthen pot.
“Matke ka paani bhi hai. Matke ka paani peekar hum bade huye na. Mummy ne bola ghar sab theek hai…yeh rakho…kitchen me (We grew up drinking water from an earthen pot. My mother told me to always keep one in the kitchen),” she shared.
Her nostalgic confession raises a simple but relevant question, should you drink water from an earthen pot all year round?
According to Dr. Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, the answer is yes. “One can drink matka (clay pot) water throughout the year, and it’s especially beneficial during the summer. Matkas naturally cool the water without the need for electricity or refrigeration,” she explained.
The clay’s porous structure allows tiny amounts of water to seep to the surface and evaporate, which cools it naturally, a chemical-free process that doesn’t cause issues like throat infections.
Benefits of Drinking Water from an Earthen Pot
Natural Cooling: Keeps water at a pleasant temperature without refrigeration.
Eco-Friendly: No electricity or plastic usage, reducing your carbon footprint.
Alkaline Effect: Clay is alkaline in nature, which can help balance the body’s pH.
Gentle on the Throat: Unlike ice-cold refrigerated water, matka water is soothing and less likely to irritate the throat.
Mineral Enrichment: Clay can add trace minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium to the water.
Tips for Safe and Hygienic Matka Water
Clean Regularly: Wash the pot thoroughly every 3–4 days to prevent bacterial growth.
Use Fresh Water: Change the water daily for freshness and hygiene.
Place in a Cool Spot: Keep the pot away from direct sunlight to maintain the cooling effect.
Avoid Chemicals: Never use detergents — clean with hot water and a natural scrub.
Dedicated Ladle or Tap: Use a separate ladle or built-in tap to prevent contamination from hands.
