Sanya Malhotra reacted to her films Kathal, Jawan and Sam Baadur’s win at National Film Awards
Bollywood actress Sanya Malhotra is over the moon, as three of her films—Jawan, Kathal, and Sam Bahadur—have won top awards at the 71st National Film Awards. For Sanya Malhotra, this accomplishment is both overwhelming and validating. While Kathal received the award for Best Hindi Feature Film, Shah Rukh Khan was named Best Actor for Jawan, and Sam Bahadur garnered multiple honours, including Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social, and Environmental Values, Best Makeup, and Best Costume Design.
Speaking with Hindustan Times, Sanya Malhotra expressed her delight at learning all three films were honoured. She reflected on the importance of trusting her instincts as an actor, noting that one cannot always predict a project’s reception and must rely on what excites and moves them. “You know when I found out that all three were being honoured with National Awards I had to take a moment. It’s rare, and I don’t take it for granted at all. It really makes me reflect on how important it is to trust your gut. As an actor, you don’t always know how a project will be received, you just go by what moves you, what excites you. And this has just reaffirmed that instinct for me in the most beautiful way,” she said.
Leading Kathal holds a special place for Sanya Malhotra. She described the experience as surreal and felt proud of the team’s work on a film that began as an unusual, quirky story and achieved significant recognition. “Honestly it still hasn’t sunk in fully. Kathal winning the National Award for Best Hindi Feature Film is just… surreal. To be the face of a film like this that started as such an unusual, quirky story and to see it reach this kind of recognition, it’s overwhelming. I’m so proud of the entire team, and I feel incredibly grateful to have been a part of this journey,” she shared.
Considering the significance of awards in her career, Malhotra acknowledged that while awards do not define an artist’s worth, they bring validation and joy, especially when they are a genuine appreciation of one’s work. “The National Award is just… different. It holds a very special place. It feels like the country acknowledging your work and that’s a big, big deal. It’s emotional. It’s humbling,” she expressed.
Sanya Malhotra will next be seen in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari and Bandar, which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025, along with another global action-comedy film set to start filming later this year.
