Yash Raj Films’ War 2, one of the most anticipated Bollywood releases of the year, is gearing up to hit theatres on August 14. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani in lead roles, the film promises high-octane action and a gripping spy-versus-spy drama. But before it could make its way to cinema halls, the Ayan Mukerji directorial went through a round of changes mandated by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the CBFC examined the film closely and asked the makers to carry out multiple audio and visual modifications. The most notable changes include muting “inappropriate references” in six separate places in the film. An “obscene” dialogue was completely replaced with an approved, toned-down sentence. Additionally, a two-second “obscene” gesture—occurring roughly a minute after the controversial dialogue—was ordered to be removed entirely.

In another directive, the CBFC asked the team to tone down the sensual imagery by 50%, amounting to a cut of approximately nine seconds. These visuals are speculated to be from Kiara Advani’s bikini sequence in the film. While these edits were carried out, the board granted War 2 a U/A 16+ certificate on August 6, with its original runtime clocking in at 2 hours, 59 minutes, and 49 seconds (179.49 minutes).

Interestingly, the changes did not end there. Just two days later, the makers of War 2 voluntarily approached the CBFC to make further tweaks—not in content, but in length. They trimmed the film’s duration by over eight minutes, bringing it down to 2 hours, 51 minutes, and 44 seconds (171.44 minutes). It is understood that these cuts were made for pacing purposes, as the CBFC did not request any additional deletions, and the elaborate action sequences remain completely intact.

The film’s plot sets up an intense face-off between Hrithik Roshan’s character, Major Kabir Dhaliwal, and Jr NTR’s Vikram. Both are Indian spies but operate on vastly different interpretations of patriotism, leading to a clash that promises to be both physical and ideological. Kiara Advani steps in as Kavya Luthra, a character expected to play a pivotal role in the unfolding drama.

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 serves as the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster War, which starred Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff, and Vaani Kapoor. The first film was a runaway hit, praised for its slick action and stylish storytelling. This sequel is also a part of the growing YRF Spy Universe, which connects characters and narratives from films like Pathaan and Tiger Zinda Hai.

With its refined runtime, CBFC-approved edits, and a star-studded cast, War 2 is poised to be a major cinematic event. Whether the cuts will have any impact on its storytelling remains to be seen, but the buzz around its release suggests audiences are ready for another explosive chapter in the spy franchise.
