Cochin Airport authorities accuses SpiceJet of ‘misinformation’ over Kochi flight disruptions

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) on Saturday accused SpiceJet of spreading misinformation after the airline attributed disruptions to bad weather in Kochi.

In a social media post earlier today, SpiceJet said that due to bad weather in Kochi, all arrivals, departures and consequential flights could be affected. It further asked passengers to check their flight status before travelling to the airport.

CIAL disputes weather-related disruption claim

In its passenger advisory issued on August 22, CIAL said it had observed continuing operational issues affecting SpiceJet’s international services, including flights operating from Kochi. The airport operator said the disruptions had caused inconvenience and uncertainty among passengers.

CIAL alleged that SpiceJet had attributed the disruptions to bad weather despite there being no adverse weather conditions in Kochi that warranted such disruptions.

The airport operator also said that no other airline operating from Kochi had reported similar cancellations or disruptions due to weather during the same period.

Airport says passenger complaints have increased

CIAL said passenger grievances over the SpiceJet disruptions had continued, but the issues had not been adequately addressed by the airline and had worsened over the past few days. The airport operator said it had made efforts to assist affected passengers and provide them with the necessary support.

SpiceJet staff cite operational issues

A SpiceJet ground staff member at Kochi airport attributed the disruptions to operational and technical issues rather than weather conditions. Speaking with Onmanorama, the staff said, “We are facing delays mainly due to operational reasons. We haven’t stated bad weather as the reason from our staff side. We cannot say it’s because of bad weather because other flights are operating normally from here. It is mainly due to operational and technical reasons. We have no idea why the ‘bad weather’ was cited as a reason in the X post.”

Passengers advised to check flight status

CIAL has advised passengers booked on SpiceJet flights to recheck their flight status with the airline before leaving for the airport.

SpiceJet, meanwhile, has asked passengers to verify their flight details through its flight-status service, citing possible weather-related effects on flights.
