According to an official statement, Indian citizens holding an ordinary passport are no longer required to obtain an airport transit visa when transiting through the international zone of airports in French territory. The exemption applies only to passengers who remain within the international transit area during a layover while travelling to a third country.
The development was welcomed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) during its briefing. Officials said the operationalisation of visa-free transit for Indian nationals through French airports follows an understanding reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron during the latter’s visit to India in February 2026.
The MEA said the decision reflects the enduring partnership between India and France and is expected to facilitate smoother movement and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.
