The recent Thailand-Cambodia border tensions has sparked a wave of travel advisories from across the globe and the Indian Embassy in Thailand asking Indian citizens to avoid travel to border destinations near Thailand and Cambodia. While this is not the first travel advisory issued by Indian authorities, the Ministry of External Affairs had earlier asked Indians to avoid travelling to Iran, Israel and other countries that have been embroiled in war or civil unrest.

These advisories have been prompted by the deteriorating security conditions in multiple regions, often marked by internal conflict, armed violence, and lawlessness. Take a look at the seven countries that Indians have been asked to avoid non-essential travel to. (Image: Reuters)

No 1. Cambodia | The advisory against travelling to Cambodia is primarily due to incidents of fraudulent job offers and recruitment scams targeting Indian nationals. Many individuals have reportedly fallen victim to abuse and exploitation after being lured by fake employment opportunities. Travellers are advised to thoroughly verify job offers and stay in touch with the Indian mission. (Image: Shutterstock)

No 2. Myanmar | Indian nationals have been asked to avoid all non-essential travel to Myanmar owing to armed clashes in several regions, particularly near border areas. The situation remains unpredictable with frequent blockades and disruptions in communication. Citizens already in the country are urged to avoid affected regions and register their presence with local Indian authorities. (Image: Shutterstock)

No 3. Iraq | Travel to Iraq is strongly discouraged due to ongoing violence, the threat of terrorism, and limited availability of emergency services for foreign nationals. The general security environment remains highly unstable, especially in conflict-prone zones. Indian citizens are advised to cancel or postpone any planned travel until conditions improve. No 4. Syria | Due to escalating hostilities and growing insecurity, Indian nationals are strongly warned against travelling to Syria. Airstrikes and unrest in major cities pose significant risks, making it unsafe for any form of civilian movement. Those already in the country are advised to leave on commercial flights if available and to restrict movement to essential needs only. (Image: Reuters)

No 5. Libya | The situation in Libya remains dangerous due to civil unrest, militia activity, and the threat of violence in urban centres and across highways. Travelling between cities is particularly hazardous, and unexploded ordnance adds to the risks. Indian nationals are urged to avoid entering the country and stay updated on safety information. No 6. Lebanon | In view of rising tensions, bombings, and unpredictable security developments, Indian citizens are advised not to travel to Lebanon. The risk to personal safety is high, especially in areas close to conflict zones or sites of recent violence. No 7. Bangladesh | Indian citizens are advised to avoid travel to Bangladesh due to heightened political tensions and incidents of widespread unrest. Demonstrations and clashes have resulted in disruptions to daily life and transport. Travellers are advised to exercise caution and limit movement within the country if already present.
