Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has lauded Shubman Gill for his outstanding performance as a batter in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, moving past comparisons with Virat Kohli. After Kohli’s retirement, Gill assumed the role of Test side skipper and took over the No.4 spot. Despite doubts about his ability to excel in this role, the Indian captain silenced critics with an impressive run during the England tour.
Gill amassed 754 runs at an average of 75.4 in 10 innings, equalling the record for most hundreds in a series in England held by Sunil Gavaskar and Sir Don Bradman. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Chopra emphasised that Gill has proven he is creating his own legacy at No.4 with his remarkable performances.
“When you start batting at a new number, and you know that number belonged to Virat Kohli, comparisons would happen, he said, ‘Leave comparisons, I would write my own story.’” Aakash Chopra was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.
What Aakash Chopra Say About Shubman Gill?
Chopra was particularly impressed with Gill’s performances throughout the series, which included a double century and a century during the Edgbaston victory.
“Forget series, careers end without scoring 750 runs. He started from the first match by scoring a hundred at Headingley. After that, he scored nearly 450 runs in one match at Edgbaston. He won that match. 430 runs to be precise, 250-plus in the first innings and 150-plus in the second innings,” Chopra said.
Chopra also noted that Gill’s success as a batter was essential to his leadership, as it would have been challenging to lead without performing well with the bat.
“Shubman Gill, the batter, has to help Shubman Gill, the captain, because captaincy would become easy if Gill scored runs. He said he wouldn’t just score runs, but create history. He said he would break records. Has any captain scored more than 750 runs in a Test series?” Chopra said.
Gill also made a strong statement by coming into the series without many runs outside India.
“His average away from Asia was nothing. His average of 29 away from home was also nothing, and he had played three Tests in England across two or three years and hadn’t scored runs there either. One Australia series was good, but after that, he had hardly done anything.”
Gill will return to the Test arena in September when the West Indies visit India for two matches.
