Eye care is essential in our increasingly digital world. Whether you’re a casual gamer or an avid metaverse explorer, adopting these habits can help preserve your vision

Prolonged exposure to screens, virtual reality (VR) headsets, and intense visual stimuli can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome
With the rapid rise of immersive gaming and the expanding reach of the metaverse, screen time has surged like never before. While these virtual worlds offer entertainment, social interaction, and even work opportunities, they also pose serious challenges to eye health. Prolonged exposure to screens, virtual reality (VR) headsets, and intense visual stimuli can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. Gamers and metaverse users must take proactive steps to protect their eyes and maintain long-term visual well-being.
Dr Neeraj Sanduja, MBBS, MS, Ophthalmologist, and Eye Surgeon shares all you need to know:
1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
One of the most recommended strategies for reducing eye strain is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This simple habit helps relax the eye muscles and reduce fatigue caused by focusing on screens for extended periods.
2. Use Blue Light Filters
Digital screens emit blue light, which can disrupt sleep patterns and contribute to eye strain. Many gaming monitors, smartphones, and VR headsets now come with built-in blue light filter settings. Alternatively, blue light-blocking glasses can be worn to filter out harmful wavelengths, especially during nighttime gaming sessions.
3. Adjust Lighting and Screen Settings
Proper lighting plays a crucial role in reducing glare and preventing strain. Avoid gaming in dark rooms where the contrast between the screen and surroundings is too high. Instead, maintain ambient lighting to reduce harsh brightness. Also, adjust the brightness, contrast, and text size on your screen or headset for optimal comfort.
4. Keep a Safe Viewing Distance
Whether using a monitor or a VR headset, maintaining a proper distance is essential. Sit at least an arm’s length (about 20–24 inches) from your monitor. With VR headsets, follow the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines for fit and distance to avoid discomfort or eye fatigue.
5. Take Regular Breaks
Prolonged gaming marathons can cause not only mental fatigue but also physical eye stress. Make it a point to take breaks every hour. During these breaks, step away from the screen, blink frequently to moisten the eyes, and consider doing some gentle eye exercises or stretches.
6. Stay Hydrated and Blink More
Gamers often blink less while focusing intently, leading to dry, irritated eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink regularly, and drink plenty of water to keep your eyes naturally lubricated. If dryness persists, consider using preservative-free artificial tears.
7. Use Ergonomic Equipment
Invest in an ergonomic setup that includes an adjustable chair, a monitor at eye level, and screen filters to reduce glare. If using VR or AR devices, ensure they are properly calibrated and comfortable to avoid undue strain.
8. Get Regular Eye Check-Ups
Lastly, regular visits to an optometrist can help detect early signs of eye strain, vision problems, or even underlying conditions. If you’re a frequent gamer or spend extended time in virtual environments, mention this to your eye doctor for tailored advice.
Eye care is essential in our increasingly digital world. Whether you’re a casual gamer or an avid metaverse explorer, adopting these habits can help preserve your vision and keep your gaming experience immersive and healthy.
