The second Test of the ongoing Ashes series between Australia and England will be played at The Gabba in Brisbane from December 4 to 8. The match in Brisbane is a day-night affair and will be played with the pink ball. In the absence of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith will continue to captain the hosts and he will look to lead the hosts to another memorable win over England to take 2-0 lead in the ongoing series.
On the other hand, England will strive to bounce back from their defeat in Perth. The Bazball merchants, who arrived Down Under amidst heightened expectations from their previous trips, did ruffle some feathers in the Aussie camp. But the hosts ultimately prevailed as Travis Head produced a counterattack for the ages on November 22 at Optus Stadium.
On a grassy surface that offered extravagant seam movement to the two bowling attacks, a stunning 19 wickets fell on Day 1 of the Test match before it was all over by the evening the next day. With Australia set the task of achieving the first 200-plus score of the Test in the final innings, Head, who wasn’t supposed to be opening until Usman Khawaja pulled his back, hammered the English bowling unit for arguably his finest knock.
The courageous left-hander blazed a range of high-quality strokes and finished with a memorable 123 off just 83 deliveries to help Australia reach the 205-run target inside 29 overs. Head’s defining innings featured 16 fours and 4 sixes. He played around with the field and countered all of the opposition skipper Ben Stokes’ plans. Feeling inspired by his teammate, No. 3 Marnus Labuschagne (51*) also batted aggressively and eventually took his team home with eight wickets intact.
For England, the result could’ve been different had their adventurous set of batters been a little bit cautious at times. They did bounce back and took a 40-run lead in the Test match despite posting 172 in the first innings, but a horrible collapse for just 164 all out in the third essay gave Australia the door back in. The challenge for England will only get tougher now in the pink-ball D/N Brisbane Test, where the likes of Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland will be digging into their batting unit again.
Weather Forecast
As we finally approach the height of the Australian summer, hotter weather awaits the two teams for the second Test of the five-match series. Brisbane has a forecast for temperatures ranging from 18 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius. No rain showers are predicted during the fixture, with the humidity nudging close to 50 per cent and the wind flowing at close to 10 km/hour.
