Star middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who is also the vice-captain of India’s ODI team, is doubtful for the three-match ODI series between India and South Africa. India will face South Africa in a three-match ODI series later this month. The series opener is scheduled to take place in Ranchi on November 30, and the next two matches will be played in Raipur and Visakhapatnam on December 3 and 6, respectively.
The 30-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai suffered an injury while fielding during the third India-Australia ODI in Sydney on October 25, and due to that, he has been out of action these days.
According to a report in the Indian Express on Tuesday (November 11), Iyer, who scored a half-century in the second ODI against Australia at Adelaide Oval, will take some more time to be fully match fit, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doesn’t want to rush him.
The selection committee has been informed about Iyer’s status, and as per medical reports, he will need nearly more than a month to be match fit.
“He will take more time to be fully match fit, and the board and selection committee don’t want to rush after his injury. He is doubtful for the South Africa ODI series,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
The Ajit Agarkar-led senior men’s selection committee will announce India’s ODI squad for the home series in the coming days. In place of Iyer, Tilak Varma could get a chance. The left-handed batter from Hyderabad is a No. 4 batter for India in T20Is and on November 5, he was also appointed as the captain of India A team for the upcoming three-match one-day series against South Africa A.
