Former actress Mamta Kulkarni sparked outrage by saying that Dawood Ibrahim is not a terrorist and that he never carried out any bomb blasts or anti-national acts in India. Mamta also referred to Vicky Goswami, her alleged partner, who was linked to the Rs 2,000 crore drug trafficking case in 2015, and refuted any association with the underworld don.

A video went viral on social media from an event in UP’s Gorakhpur, where Kulkarni was heard saying, “Dawood Ibrahim se durr durr se koi lena dena nahi hain. Kisi ek ka naam zaroor tha (probably Vicky Goswami), ekin agar aap dekhoge toh usne koi bomb blast ya anti-national cheez nahi ki thi desh ke andar. Main uske saath toh nahi hoon, lekin he is not some terrorist. Apko uska difference bhi samajh mein aana chahiye. (I had nothing to do with Dawood Ibrahim. Another person was mentioned, but if you look closely, he never carried out any bomb blast or anti-national act in the country. I am not with him, but he is not some terrorist. You should understand the difference).”

She also denied meeting Dawood or being associated with him. “Aap jab Dawood ka naam lete ho… jiske saath mera naam juda hain, usne kabhi bomb blast nahi kiya kabhi Bombay ke andar. Kabhi suna aapne? Jiska naam aap le rahe ho, Dawood ka naam kabhi tha hi nahi. Dawood ko main kabhi jeevan mein nahi mili hoon. (When you take Dawood’s name — the one my name is associated with — he never carried out any bomb blast in Bombay. Have you ever heard of that? The person whose name you’re taking, Dawood’s name was never there. I have never met Dawood in my entire life).”

In 2015, Mamta Kulkarni was named in a major international drug trafficking case. The Thane police claimed that the actress was one of the accused involved in supplying ephedrine for the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine to a Rs 2000 crore international drug racket and gangster, intended for trafficking. This was described as “India’s biggest ever drug seizure” at the time.

It was reported that she along with her partner Vicky Goswami and other co-accused attended a meeting in an international drug ring in Kenya in January 2016. However, later, the Bombay High Court cancelled the FIR against Mamta and gave her a clean chit.

Kulkarni’s remarks sparked massive outrage online. “Kulkarni, who wears the cloak of religion and feigns spirituality, has not lost her love for her lovers… Look at Mamta’s love for Dawood, whom the entire world has branded a terrorist,” a user said.

After a furious reaction, Kulkarni took to Instagram to clarify her remarks, in which she repeated that she had neither met Dawood Ibrahim nor spoken to him. Mentioning Vicky Goswami, Kulkarni said she was associated with him for some time, but he was not involved in any anti-national activities.

She accused the press of inflaming her remarks and urged people to calmly listen to her interview once again, while appealing to sages and saints to use their wisdom.

Mamta appeared in several commercially successful Hindi films such as Waqt Hamara Hai, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Andolan and Baazi. Her last Bollywood film was released in 2002. She later quit Bollywood and became a spiritual leader in the Kinnar Akhara to serve Sanatana Dharma.
