In an unfortunate twist of events for India, Shreyas Iyer’s excellent, partnership-breaking catch against Australia in Sydney on Saturday (October 25) came at the cost of what looked like a serious injury for the batter.
It happened on the third ball of the 34th over. Rana nailed a good length ball on the off-stump, and Alex Carey played almost a nothing shot, completely mis-timing a leg-sided heave to high over backward point.
Shreyas ran back from the in-field position and kept his eyes on the ball. When the ball looked to be going beyond him, he outstretched his body and grabbed it using his chest, falling and rolling on his left side in the process. That same movement seemed to injure him badly as he immediately looked in pain, holding on to the rib area and wincing in pain.
Kuldeep Yadav called for the physio to enter the pitch, and Shreyas didn’t get off the ground for several minutes, as the rest of his teammates gathered around. Eventually, he was helped off the ground with the physio’s help. Watch the incident here:

India would be sweating about the vice-captain’s fitness and hoping that it isn’t anything serious enough to rule him out for more than a few days. However, he doesn’t have any immediate matches to play as India next play T20Is against the Aussies and Tests against South Africa at home — both formats where he’s out of favor anyway.
The next ODIs will take place from November 30 against the Proteas.
India need 237 runs to win
Matt Renshaw’s composed 56 showcased his growing white-ball maturity, but India’s bowlers, led by Harshit Rana’s fiery 4/39, restricted Australia to 236 in the final ODI. Early partnerships, 61 between Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, and 54 between Renshaw and Alex Carey, promised more before sharp Indian fielding and disciplined spin halted progress.
Axar Patel bowled Marsh, Virat Kohli, and Iyer pulled off stunning catches, and Washington Sundar trapped Renshaw LBW. Despite brief lower-order resistance, Australia’s innings never gathered momentum against India’s relentless attack and energetic fielding display at the SCG.
It remains to be seen if Iyer will come out to bat in the second innings.
