Shah Rukh Khan is a superstar and his stardom transcends borders. Yet, behind all the success, glitz and fame lies a deeply emotional past for Khan that is marked by personal tragedies. The actor lost both his parents at a young age and has shouldered the pain of his sister Shehnaz Lalarukh Khan’s health problems. Shehnaz was profoundly affected by her parents’ passing, which affected her health. In a 2012 throwback interview with Tehelka TV, SRK opened up about one of the most difficult phases of his life and shared how he and his sister dealt with the loss.

SRK, who recently joined the “billionaires’ bracket” as per the Hurun India Rich List 2025, shared in a throwback interview how he dealt with his sister’s illness when he was shooting for the Aditya Chopra directorial film, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. He said, “She didn’t cry, she didn’t speak, she just kept looking into space, and it just changed her world. Mashallah, now she’s better.” Khan revealed that his sister has some deficiencies.

Recalling an incident from DDLJ sets, SRK revealed that Shehnaz was hospitalised and the doctors had told him that his sister won’t survive. “I took her to Switzerland, got her treated there while I was shooting Tujhe Dekha To Ye Jaana Sanam,” added the My Name Is Khan actor. Khan’s sister never recovered from the tragic loss of their father and mother, who passed away within a span of 10 years. In the interview, King Khan called him and his sister “yateem”. Shehnaz had completed her MA.LLB and was very intelligent; however, as per SRK, “she couldn’t face the reality of losing her parents.”

King Khan’s Emotional Struggles

Talking about how he personally dealt with losing his parents, SRK revealed that he developed a sense of detachment and according to him, his “false bravado” is just a way to hide the sadness in his life. SRK feared that he would become like his sister, whom he described as “naive” and “innocent.” SRK said, “My kids love her more than they love me and my wife.”

SRK stated that he lacks the guts to be ‘so simple’ and ‘so hurt and disturbed.’ To avoid the sadness, he works all day long, and is happy even though a lot of things are said about him. “Makes a joke about the things that I do, but still keeps doing them because if I didn’t do that, I think I would be in the same state of potassium deficiency and depression. So, to avoid depression, I act,” added Khan.
