As artificial intelligence continues to dominate digital spaces, its misuse is sparking growing concerns, especially among celebrities. At the trailer launch of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan candidly discussed the impact of AI on creativity, consent, and personal identity.
Janhvi, who stars as Tulsi in Shashank Khaitan’s upcoming rom-com, revealed a personal experience highlighting this issue. “When I see on social media, there are so many AI images being circulated against my will,” she said. “You and I can say it’s an AI image, but the common man will think, ‘Yeh toh yeh pehen ke pohonch gayi (She actually went out wearing this).’” The actor, identifying as “old-school,” emphasised the importance of protecting human creativity and maintaining authenticity in storytelling.
AI and the Challenges of Consent in Cinema
Varun Dhawan supported Janhvi’s concerns, acknowledging the double-edged nature of technology. “Technology is helpful, but it has its demerits. Laws and regulations are needed to protect actors and their identity from being misused,” he noted. He also highlighted that actors’ unique charm and ‘X-factor’ cannot be replicated by any algorithm, underscoring the irreplaceable human element in cinema.
The issue is not limited to social media posts. The Indian film industry has recently faced debates over AI usage in films. Controversy arose when Aanand L Rai’s Raanjhanaa was altered with AI and re-released in Tamil with a modified ending, prompting discussions on creative control, artistic integrity, and ethical filmmaking.
