India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has stated that workload management primarily focuses on pacers and discussions regarding workload concerns for batters only arise when the individual themselves confesses to feeling tired, reiterating that there is no workload concern for vice-captain Shubman Gill.
Gill led India in a five-match Test series in England and had been part of India’s Champions Trophy-winning team, before featuring in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans.
Kotak dismissed concerns over Gill’s workload, explaining that the side’s management focuses on pacers, while batters are monitored only if they report feeling overwhelmed.
“I don’t know how you look at workload management, but generally we do it for bowlers, mainly fast bowlers. When it comes to batsmen, only if they mentally feel that cricket has become too much for them does it become a concern,” Kotak said while speaking to the media.
“In my view, workload management is actually meant for fast bowlers. For batsmen, I don’t think workload management is that much of an issue,” Kotak added.
When asked about changes in Gill’s technique, Kotak highlighted the batter’s adaptability, noting that modern cricketers know how to adjust their game for different formats, switching focus between red-ball and white-ball cricket during practice.
“Nowadays, whichever format a player takes up, they are very much aware of how to approach red-ball cricket and how to approach white-ball cricket. Even in white-ball cricket, they know how to approach the powerplay and how to approach the death overs,” Kotak said.
“Of course, there will be some technical adjustments and these players are fully aware of what needs to be done. So, the players will definitely try to make those adjustments,” Kotak added.
Gill has scored 598 runs in 22 T20Is, at an average of 31.47 and a strike rate of 141. He will next be seen in action against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday, September 14 in Dubai.
