Ganesh Visarjan 2025: Ganesh Chaturthi is one of India’s most celebrated festivals, honoring Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and bringer of prosperity. The festival begins with the installation of beautifully crafted idols in homes and public pandals, where devotees offer prayers, sweets and flowers.

For ten days, families and communities gather for daily aarti and rituals. The celebration concludes with Ganesh Visarjan, the immersion of the idol in water, symbolising his return to Mount Kailash while carrying away difficulties and leaving blessings behind.

The visarjan is both emotional and joyous, marked with chants of Ganapati Bappa Moriya as devotees bid him farewell.

Ganesh Visarjan 2025: Date and timings

This year, Ganesh Visarjan will be marked on Saturday, September 6, 2025, the last day of Ganesh Chaturthi. Drik Panchang notes the Chaturdashi tithi begins at 3:12 AM on September 6 and ends at 1:41 AM on September 7.

Auspicious visarjan muhurat includes:

  1. Morning (Shubha): 7:36 AM – 9:10 AM
  2. Afternoon (Chara, Labha, Amrita): 12:19 PM – 5:02 PM
  3. Evening (Labha): 6:37 PM – 8:02 PM
  4. Night (Shubha, Amrita, Chara): 9:28 PM – 1:45 AM (September 7)
  5. Early Morning (Labha): 4:36 AM – 6:02 AM (September 7)

Ganesh Virasjan Mantras

There are no fixed mantras for visarjan. Devotees usually chant Ganapati Bappa Moriya while carrying the idol. Some also recite this prayer:

Mushikavaahana modaka hastha,

Chaamara karna vilambitha sutra,

Vaamana rupa maheshwara putra,

Vighna vinaayaka paada namasthe

Step-by-step Visarjan Rituals

  1. Morning aarti: Begin the day with aarti. Sing Jai Ganesh Deva and Sukhkarta Dukhharta. Offer bhog (prasad) and distribute it among family members.
  2. Uttarang puja: Before immersion, perform Uttarang puja. Offer five items: oil lamp, flowers, incense, fragrance and food.
  3. Visarjan aarti at home: Gather family again and perform visarjan aarti. After this, gently move the idol slightly forward. This act signals to Ganesha that it is time for visarjan.
  4. Express gratitude: Thank Ganesha for visiting the home, ask for forgiveness for mistakes, and request him to return next year if you plan to bring the idol again. Offer curd and rice into the idol’s hand as part of the farewell ritual.
  5. Prepare the journey food: Tie half a dry coconut filled with jaggery and five grains in a red cloth and fasten it to the idol’s hand. This is symbolic food for Ganesha’s journey.
  6. Take blessings through the home: Lift the idol and carry it through main rooms of the house so blessings reach every corner.
  7. Coconut offering before exit: At the door, circle a coconut three times over the idol and break it. Leave it aside; it is not distributed as prasad.
  8. Chanting on the way: Walk towards the immersion spot while chanting Ganapati Bappa Moriya. Once lifted, the idol should not be placed down again.
  9. Aarti at the immersion site: On reaching the water body, perform one last aarti. Remove garlands and decorations, and keep them aside responsibly instead of discarding them into the water.
  10. Immersion of the idol: Face the idol towards the family, then gently immerse it in the water. Devotees believe he takes away troubles and leaves blessings of prosperity and peace.

Symbolic Visarjan option

If the idol is made of metal or clay meant for reuse, families can do a symbolic immersion by sprinkling water. The idol is then placed safely in the puja room for the year ahead.
