Hillbrush Transitions Hygiene Range to Plastic Free Packaging Amid Rising PFAS Restrictions

Mere, Wiltshire, UK – December, 2025 – Hillbrush, the UK’s leading manufacturer of professional cleaning and hygiene tools, has removed all single use plastic packaging from its hygiene range and adopted biodegradable labels printed with food safe ink. This packaging innovation supports Hillbrush’s long term sustainability goals and prepares customers for the latest regulatory changes regarding per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food contact packaging. As of 1 January 2026, Illinois prohibits the sale or distribution of food packaging containing intentionally added PFAS, including coatings, closures, inks and labels. Maine’s Board of Environmental Protection has adopted rules to prohibit PFAS use in plant fibre food packaging (e.g., paper and paperboard bags, wraps and pizza boxes) effective 25 May 2026. New York is also expanding its bans on polystyrene foam containers and personal care bottles. These state laws signal a broader shift toward safer, more sustainable food contact materials. “Hillbrush has been at the forefront of hygienic cleaning for over a century. Our latest move to plastic free packaging aligns with industry trends and the growing number of PFAS bans in food packaging across several states,” said [Spokesperson’s Name], [Title] at Hillbrush. “By eliminating plastic wraps and bags and using biodegradable labels with food safe inks, we ensure our hygiene products remain fully compliant and environmentally responsible.” Key Packaging Features • Zero single use plastic – Hillbrush has removed the plastic wrap/bag that previously held a barcode or SKU label, replacing it with a biodegradable label adhered directly to the product. • Food safe materials – The new labels are made from compostable material and printed using food safe inks, meeting the stringent standards of food contact equipment. • PFAS free – Hillbrush’s packaging contains no intentionally added PFAS, anticipating upcoming state regulations that prohibit such substances in food contact packaging. The packaging change complements Hillbrush’s broader sustainability initiatives, which include solar powered manufacturing, electric vehicle charging for staff and visitors, and an ECO range made with recycled materials. It also reinforces Hillbrush’s commitment to compliance: the company’s colour coded, HACCP friendly hygiene brushes, squeegees and scrapers help food manufacturers adhere to FDA sanitation guidance and FSMA requirements. Hillbrush will showcase its plastic free hygienic range, along with its full portfolio of cleaning tools and storage solutions, at the 2026 Food Safety Summit. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about how Hillbrush products support audit ready sanitation programmes and prepare businesses for future packaging regulations.
