MWC 2026 is seeing more modular concepts.
Lenovo has showcased a new unique version of its ThinkBook lineup at the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona this week. Concepts are usually eye-catching and get people talking, which is exactly what you get with the new model, a modular laptop that can replace parts just like how the smartphones have shown for many years.
Detachable displays are not a novel idea in 2026 but Lenovo suggests its modular concept goes well beyond the existing tech and you can clearly mix-and-match the ports and have more fun with the options on the table.
Swap Out Everything
Modular devices have excited us over the years but the prospect of laptop parts being replaceable sounds very convenient. This ThinkBook concept has a dual screen setup which you can swap out and fit a keyboard panel. The second screen on the model can be removed to even put a stand to give you a compact version of a monitor.
Ports are also swappable and that’s where the modular nature truly takes shape. You can switch the sides of the HDMI or the USB 3.0 port based on what you need, or even move the charging port for better convenience with the switch board.
Having modular design also enables easier repairs for these devices, and not having to upgrade every time something stops working. Asus has shown these products are doable and can be sold in the market, albeit at a premium and Lenovo will have to make all these designs work in the final products.
Having said that, Lenovo’s got a history with these unique modular concepts. Previously the company has showcased laptops with rollable displays but most of them are still in the development phase. So do we get to see the new modular version out in the market anytime soon? Lenovo hasn’t talked about a release date for this product which suggests the wait could be a long one.
