UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) announced on Friday that from 25 February 2026, most people applying for a UK visa will use the system.
The digital system is part of the UK government’s plan to modernise border and immigration processes while making international travel planning easier for visa holders.
The eVisa replaces visa vignette stickers in passports and other physical immigration documents. Applicants no longer need to submit their passports while a decision is pending, allowing them to apply for visas to other countries at the same time.
They will usually attend one appointment at a Visa Application Centre to confirm identity, submit documents if required and enrol biometrics, after which they can leave with their passport.
“Over 10 million people are already using secure and convenient eVisas, which are replacing physical immigration status documents such as biometric residence permits (BRPs) and visa vignette stickers in passports. We are now in the final phases of implementation, with eVisas becoming the default evidence of status for most immigration routes to the UK,” UK Visas and Immigration said.
Here’s how the eVisa application process works:
- Start your visa application online on the official gov.uk website and fill in the form.
- Book an appointment with VFS Global after submitting the form.
- Visit the Visa Application Centre to confirm your identity, submit documents (if required) and give biometrics.
- Leave the centre with your passport; you do not need to submit it while waiting.
- Wait for the visa decision while keeping your passport with you.
- If approved, receive an email with instructions to access your eVisa online.
- Create or sign in to your UKVI account to view your eVisa.
- Check that all details on the eVisa are correct before travelling to the UK.
Srinarayan Sankaran, Chief Operating Officer – Global Operations at VFS Global, said the change improves the process for travellers. “The move to eVisas will significantly enhance the customer process for travellers, providing them the ease and flexibility of retaining their passports, allowing for applications to other countries in the interim.”
Digital immigration shift and rules for travellers
The UK has made eVisas compulsory for Indian travellers as part of a wider move to a fully digital immigration system. Airlines can deny boarding to passengers who do not hold an eVisa, Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or other valid permission to travel.
Immigration status is stored digitally through the UKVI system, although applicants must still visit a Visa Application Centre for identity checks and biometrics.
Visitors from 85 visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Canada and France, must obtain an ETA before travelling to the UK. The authorisation allows multiple journeys and is valid for two years, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
It is also required for transit passengers who pass through passport control. British and Irish citizens, including dual citizens, are exempt but must present valid documentation.
UKVI has advised applicants to create a UKVI account, access their eVisa and verify that all details are correct before travelling to avoid disruption.
