The decision was taken on the occasion of Mahashivratri at the winter seat of the shrine, Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. The temple gates will open at 8:00 am during Vrish Lagna, a time considered highly auspicious in the Hindu calendar.
Authorities have also appointed T Gangadhar Ling as the chief priest of Kedarnath Temple for this pilgrimage season. He will oversee the daily rituals and special ceremonies at the shrine.
Meanwhile, opening dates for other key Char Dham temples have also been finalised. The Badrinath Temple will open a day later on April 23, 2026, at 6:15 am during Brahma Muhurta, with the traditional Gadughar Yatra beginning from April 7. Gangotri and Yamunotri temples will open earlier on April 19, 2026, coinciding with Akshaya Tritiya.
With the announcement, thousands of pilgrims are expected to prepare for the annual yatra to the high-altitude Himalayan shrines. Devotees have been advised to plan their travel well in advance and stay mindful of weather conditions and accommodation arrangements in the region.
