Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that if he were a student today, he wouldn’t prioritise learning to code. He would prioritise learning how to interact with AI. Jensen Huang clarified that his point wasn’t that coding is useless. Instead, students should first learn how to work with AI systems like ChatGPT and understand how to use them to become better lawyers, doctors, chemists or engineers.

“Learning how to interact with AI is not unlike being someone who is really good at asking questions,” he said.

Prompting, he added, requires “expertise in artistry.”

What Is AI Fluency?

AI fluency is the ability to understand, communicate with and leverage AI effectively. It goes beyond simply using AI tools- it involves knowing how AI works, recognising its limitations and integrating it thoughtfully into real-world tasks. AI-fluent individuals can critically evaluate AI outputs, apply them to enhance productivity, solve problems and make informed decisions while remaining aware of ethical, societal and professional implications.

Developing AI fluency requires curiosity, experimentation and continuous learning. It begins by exploring AI tools, observing how different prompts produce varying results and refining the questions asked to achieve the desired outcomes. Understanding the underlying principles of AI, including machine learning, natural language processing and generative models, strengthens the ability to use AI strategically. Equally important is applying AI outputs thoughtfully: testing results, combining them with human judgment and adapting them to specific tasks or challenges.

Over time, AI fluency transforms AI from a simple tool into a force multiplier. Professionals and creatives can use it to enhance problem-solving, accelerate research, improve decision-making and expand innovation.
