Codex has been around since 2025 but the new macOS app has better features.
OpenAI is bringing a new standalone app for Codex which houses multiple AI agents and allows developers to manage them under a hub. The new app is available for macOS users as the company looks to entice more users from Anthropic and Cursor and give them more reasons and purpose to use ChatGPT and build AI agents through its own platforms.
Codex on macOS is targeting these users and with the demand for AI agents increasing by the day, this launch was hard to avoid for the company.
Codex On Mac: What It Offers
Codex has been available since April last year but the standalone app for macOS users gets a new interface which has been designed with focus on giving developers a command center to manage their AI agents and assistants. AI agents have become the talk of the town as these assistants can be commanded to handle basic or complex tasks, and letting you work on the more important stuff.
These agents can write codes, or even add carts to your shopping list and make payment for them in one go. OpenAI chief Sam Altman said the Codex app is “the most loved internal product we’ve ever had.”
The new app has a separate layout where threads of different agents can be monitored and what tasks they have been assigned. That’s not all, OpenAI says the AI agents can collaborate with each other to handle multiple tasks at once. They are also being given the power to generate AI images so that multimedia is also part of their daily KRAs.
The company is opening access to the Codex app for all ChatGPT users, including those with free and Go accounts, albeit for a limited period before they subscribe to the higher tier plans.
ChatGPT 4o and other versions of the AI chatbot will be retiring this month, as confirmed by OpenAI in a recent post. Having the new ChatGPT version allows the company to sunset the previous models and this is also possible when OpenAI believes that the upgraded versions are better and stable to deliver improved performance and accuracy for the users.
ChatGPT 5 is now widely available which means people rely on the newer models, giving OpenAI more reasons to wind up the previous ones.
