Starlink offers satellite internet for a hefty price but what about a phone?
Elon Musk has once again sparked rumours about launching a Starlink phone in the near future, which will not only have AI features but also be directly linked to the satellite internet service. Musk didn’t share the idea about the device himself but was replying to a user on X who claimed that a “Starlink phone would be so sick.” Musk said, “Not out of the question at some point,” which means the SpaceX founder could actually think about making a dedicated smartphone which runs on Starlink internet but offers much more to the users.
Not Your Regular Phone
Musk further mentioned that the Starlink phone will not be your usual smartphone and it will offer performance with the help of AI. In his post, Musk pointed out that the device will be optimised purely for running maximum performance/wat neural nets, where he is referring to neural processing units (NPUs) that power AI features and tools on devices.
He doesn’t say much in terms of the hardware specs of the Starlink phone but the fact that you will have satellite internet working out of the box should be a big appeal for many. Granted, this will be an expensive device just like the internet service but even then you will have a market where this product has takers.
Earlier this week, Elon Musk received a Community Notes fact-check on X, the platform he owns, after he promoted X Chat over WhatsApp and Signal, citing privacy concerns linked to a lawsuit against Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company.
On Monday, Musk urged users to stop using WhatsApp, claiming the messaging service was not secure, and instead promoted X Chat as a safer alternative. “WhatsApp is not secure. Even Signal is questionable. Use X Chat,” Musk wrote in a post on X.
The post, however, was later accompanied by a Community Notes clarification, which said Musk’s claim was misleading. The note pointed out that while X Chat offers end-to-end encryption, it lacks forward secrecy, meaning a compromised key could expose past messages. It also said private keys are controlled by X and protected only by a four-digit PIN, while metadata is collected.
