Gmail is now getting Gemini AI-powered tools and these are available for free. The company has often talked about the dynamics of the mailing app and its future with AI features, this is probably our first close look at this version of Gmail that will be around for many years. AI Overviews have been available on search for a while and now Gmail users are getting their version along with a preview of the AI Inbox option.

Google claims Gmail has over 3 billion monthly active users and making them switch to AI could be a big coup for the tech giant whichever way you look at it.

Gmail AI Free Upgrades: What Users Are Getting

AI Overviews in Gmail will make searching your inbox for specific mails a lot easier. You can simply type, “find the tickets for my last trip to Sri Lanka,” and the Gemini AI model will do the heavy lifting in the background and give you the response. Gmail says the AI will scan your inbox, read through your message and give you the overview reply. AI overview summary will be available at the top of the inbox screen.

The detailed version of AI Overviews will need users to sign up Gemini AI Pro or Ultra plans. But the summaries for your emails will be available for free. In addition to this, Gmail is getting an AI version of proofread that will highlight the paras that need to be rephrased and do it for the users if they click on the underlined parts.

Gmail says the new proofread can analyse the drafts and allow you to frame the email with structure. This is a paid feature for which you need an AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription.

The other big change with Gemini will be the AI Inbox that will be gradually rolling out. You will see a new Inbox icon with a sparkle on the side panel where the new version will be available. Tap on that icon and you will get an AI summary of all the important emails that you might have missed and should read.

Google once again assures that just because AI is coming to your Inbox it will not be using the emails to train its models. You also get the option to turn off the AI features from the settings. Gmail is offering the new tools to its Trusted Testers for now, global rollout in the coming months.
